If you want to understand how people are finding and using your website, Google Analytics is one of the most powerful (and free!) tools available. It allows you to track key data like traffic sources, visitor behavior, top-performing pages, and so much more. Having these insights at your fingertips can help you make more informed marketing decisions, enhance your website, and ultimately drive business growth.
But for many small business owners, the first hurdle is just getting Google Analytics set up on their website. Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of installing Google Analytics on three of the most popular platforms: WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace.
Step 1: Set Up a Google Analytics Account
Before diving into your website platform, you’ll need to create a Google Analytics account if you don’t already have one.
- Go to Google Analytics.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Click Start Measuring.
- Enter your account name, property name (this is usually your website name), and business details.
- Follow the prompts to finish setup and copy your Google Measurement ID (it will look something like G-XXXXXXXXXX).
How to Install Google Analytics on WordPress (Using the Site Kit Plugin)
WordPress is one of the most common platforms for small business websites, and luckily Google makes installation easy with its Site Kit plugin.

- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Site Kit by Google.
- Click Install Now and then Activate.
- Once activated, you’ll see a new Site Kit option in your dashboard menu.
- Click Start Setup.
- Sign in with your Google account and allow permissions.
- Site Kit will automatically connect your website to Google Analytics (and Google Search Console too if you’d like).
That’s it! Your WordPress site is now connected to Google Analytics.
How to Install Google Analytics on Wix
Wix makes connecting Google Analytics simple, but you’ll need to be on a premium plan that allows you to connect your domain.

- Log in to your Wix account.
- From the dashboard, click Marketing & SEO from the side menu.
- Under Marketing Integrations, choose Google Analytics.
- Paste in your Google Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXXXXX).
- Click Save.
Your Wix website will now start tracking visitors through Google Analytics.
How to Install Google Analytics on Squarespace
Squarespace has a built-in way to add your Google Analytics code to your site.

- Log in to your Squarespace account.
- From the Home Menu, click Settings.
- Select Advanced and then click External API Keys.
- Find the Google Analytics Account Number field.
- Paste in your Google Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXXXXX).
- Save your changes.
Squarespace will now begin sending data to your Google Analytics account.
